On Tuesday, President Donald Trump made an impromptu move to bring the kids and mother of fallen New York Police Department detective Miosotis Familia on stage while he was speaking at the National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service.
After addressing the trend of ambush attacks on officers, Trump told attendees that among them was the family of Familia, who was shot and killed while sitting in her patrol car.
Breaking from his script, the president appeared to scan the crowd and said, “Where is that great family?”
Then, he invited them on stage in a clearly impromptu moment as he instructed officials to pave the way for the family.
“Come up here, please,” he asked. “Can you open those gates, please?”

Familia’s three kids’ journey to center stage was accompanied by continuous applause from the officers and members of Congress who were on stage, as well as, those who were in the audience.
After shaking their hands and offering hugs, Trump extended his hand to Familia’s mother, who is 90 years old.
As Trump put his arm around her, she leaned into the president, the 90-year-old dwarfed by his stature.
Together, they walked hand in hand to the podium, where Trump bent down to give her a kiss on her cheek and express his gratitude.
In another spontaneous gesture to honor Familia, Trump asked her partner, officer Marr, to come to the microphone and share how remarkable the fallen officer was.
“This is a woman who got injured a while ago and volunteered to come back to patrol to one of the roughest places in New York City,” he explained.
Marr added that she’d only been back on patrol for two weeks when she was murdered.
“She may have been lost that night, but she saved a lot of lives in turn because of her memory and everything that transpired after the fact,” he said. “She was an incredible person.”
After he finished speaking, he made way for Trump at the microphone and went to embrace Familia’s oldest daughter, who appeared to be crying.
Trump told the family it’s “such an honor to have you up here” and addressed the sudden change to bring them on stage.
“We weren’t going to bring you up here but I looked at you in the audience and said you have to come up because you’re representing something so important,” the president explained.
He turned to Familia’s three kids and asked, “You understand that right?” to which they nodded that they did.
